Course Introduction

Welcome to the world of Database Methods - 5N0783! Are you ready to embark on a journey into the heart of data management and unlock the secrets of powerful databases? In this course, we will dive headfirst into essential database concepts, laying the foundation for your database prowess. We'll explore the fascinating realms of database files, tables, records, and fields, gaining insight into the very building blocks of organised information. But that's just the beginning! Hold on tight as we unravel the mysteries of queries and reports, unleashing their true potential.

You'll discover the purpose of various query views like design, datasheet, structured query language (SQL), pivot tables, and pivot charts - empowering you to extract and visualise data like never before! Not stopping there, we'll take the plunge into practical hands-on operations. You'll open existing databases and perform routine tasks with ease, accessing records, entering and editing data, and adding new records, as if you were a seasoned database expert.

But that's not all - we'll equip you with the tools to become skilled at data retrieval.  Building simple queries will become second nature, and you'll learn to store them for future use, making data exploration a breeze.

And there's more! Ever wanted to construct a powerful data entry form? By the end of this course, you'll be creating forms that simplify data input, streamlining the entire database experience.

But wait, there's even more excitement in store! Brace yourself as we craft captivating reports, presenting selected information from the database in a format perfect for emailing or printing. Your data will come to life, conveying meaningful insights like never before. We'll push the boundaries further, empowering you to import data from external sources like text files, spreadsheets, or even existing databases. Your data playground will expand, but we're not done yet.

As we delve into database design, you'll build tables, keys, and establish essential table relationships to meet specific design briefs. You'll feel the thrill of creating a fully functional database from scratch, complete with tables, queries, forms, and reports! Throughout this adventure with Lir, we'll equip you with the knowledge and resources to tackle database challenges.  So, whether you're a beginner or know a little,  this course will take your data skills further.

To summarise, the aim of this module is to equip you with the knowledge, skills and competence to create and modify databases under supervision. The objectives are to facilitate you to gain a clear understanding of why we use databases, what they are for, how to create a database from a design specification, how to manipulate, retrieve and modify information, and to explore some tasks for using a database, but not exclusively, in a business administration environment.
